I guess we could consider this a low carb meal

Low Carb Diets. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

First, let me say that there is not one diet answer for all people, other than a general healthy diet.  In some cases a reduction in carbs may be what a person needs.  But this is probably more of a reduction so that their carb intake is within a healthy range.  We needs carbs.  In addition, selecting a diet for a someone must also take into consideration allergies and or  medical conditions requiring a certain diet.
The 2010 Healthy American Guidelines recommend the carbs make up between 45% and 65% of our diet. For reference, an 1600 calorie weight loss diet would have between 180 and 260 grams of carb. If you compare what Shin Ohtake calls “low carb” to the 2010 Healthy American Guidelines recommended carbohydrate you will see that it is only 30 grams higher than the range provided by Shin. This is the difference of one 6 inch pita shell or two oranges so in reality it is not as low as one would think.

But what does this mean for weight loss?

As far weight loss is concerned, there is no scientific evidence or proof that low carb diets cause preferable weight loss over other diets. In fact, studies examining diets with different levels of carbohydrate, fat, and protein intake result in the same amount of weight loss at six months and great. Low carb diets have greater effects in the short run, but this is a result of water loss more so than fat loss. Weigh loss is not about grams of carb, fat, or protein, but rather it is more about the restriction in calories. Part of the reason that carbs have gotten such a negative name is that when it comes to carbs our “bigger is better” society consumes larger portions of grains, which are a major source of carbs, than they should. Low carb diets just make us eat more closely to the amount of carbs that we should be eating. A typical serving of pasta is a half cup. On a 1600 calorie diet that means that you should only consume 2.5 cups of pasta. However, who actually only eats a half cup of pasta at a time. One plate of pasta at the Olive Garden is equal to or greater than 2.5 cups of pasta. As a result, we consume excess calories and then gain weight. Low carb diets do just that, they limit the total calories consumed. As mentioned, if weight loss in the long run is more about calorie control and not carb control there is no reason that you can’t eat carbs within the recommended ranges and still maintain weight. In addition, is that low carb diet something that can be maintained for ever and work for a family?

Oh, one last thing, don’t go to crazy with Shin’s push for fat intake. If you eat 10000 calories of fat or 10000 calories of carb you will still gain weight. As I said, weight loss is about calories. Increasing fat in the wrong forms has its own health problems,… like a heart attack.
